While
the 2001 chassis modifications were subtle, there was one announcement
post-Le Mans that was very significant. Audi revealed that
their
2001 Le Mans winning engine was utilizing direct fuel
injection.
This system injects fuel directly into each cylinder and offers
benefits
in increased power as well as decreased fuel
consumption (on the
order of 8% according to Audi). This makes the Audi R8 the
first
race car to incorporate this technology. The fact they won Le
Mans
with it makes it even more significant. |
